There is a great range of jobs available in the motor trade across Sales, Service, Bodyshop, Parts, Admin and Accounts.
Being a Sales Person in the motor trade isn’t just selling cars, it also covers vans and commercial vehicles. In this role you will meet customers and identify the vehicles that meets their requirements. You will demonstrate the vehicles then negotiate a deal and make the sale. Unfortunately, some companies cannot employ Sale Executives under a certain age due to limited insurance covers.
Technicians work on cars, vans, trucks and buses. When a vehicle needs servicing, an MOT test or some other electrical or mechanical repair, the Technician must diagnose the fault then strip and repair the faulty part or fit a new one.
A vehicle that has been damaged will go into a Bodyshop to be repaired. This is where Panel Beaters will remove and replace damaged panels or, if possible, repair panels. Once this is done, the Vehicle Painter will mix the correct colour/shade of paint then apply it to the vehicle.
Parts will most likely be required for vehicles in workshops or bodyshops for repairs. Parts wholesalers hold a great amount of stock in huge warehouses to be sent to smaller regional shops/branches and dealerships. In this department, staff have to make sure the correct stock has been ordered, check deliveries and enter it into a computer to show that it’s in stock. The part will be logged off the system when it has been sold.
The whole aim is for each dealership to make a profit, meaning that someone has to count the money to make sure it happens. Staff in the accounts department have to record all of the things that the business spends money on and what it receives. Money that comes into the business can be from selling vehicles, parts and workshop/bodyshop hours.
Administration can come in a variety of forms and can be in any department. Small or large, all businesses need to be controlled, meaning someone has to handle paperwork. It is often that admin tasks can overlap with accounts. Having great IT skills and good attention to detail is a key skill in this role.
